Ranked-Choice vs. Plurality Voting: Choosing the Right Counting Method for Your Election

Most institutional elections default to plurality voting without anyone actually deciding to use it. It's just the method everyone has seen before. But plurality and ranked-choice voting produce meaningfully different results, especially in a race with three or more candidates, and picking the wrong one for your context can leave you with a winner most of your members would say they didn't actually want.

What plurality voting does

Plurality voting is the "most votes wins" method: every voter picks one candidate, and whoever has the highest single share of votes wins, even if that share is well under 50%. It's simple to run and simple to explain, which is why it's the default for most straightforward elections.

The tradeoff shows up in a crowded field. If four candidates split a vote roughly evenly, a candidate with 28% of the vote can win outright, meaning 72% of voters preferred someone else. That outcome is legitimate under plurality rules, but it's also exactly the kind of result that gets challenged after the fact by members who feel the winner didn't have real support.

What ranked-choice voting does

Ranked-choice voting (also called instant-runoff voting) asks each voter to rank candidates in order of preference instead of picking just one. If no candidate wins a majority outright, the lowest-ranked candidate is eliminated and their votes are redistributed to those voters' next choice. This repeats until one candidate has a majority.

The practical effect: the eventual winner has to be acceptable to a majority of voters, not just the largest minority. It also removes a specific strategic problem: the fear that voting for your honest first choice might split the vote and let your least-favorite candidate win. Ranking a longer-shot candidate first never costs you your backup preference.

Where each method actually fits

Plurality works well when: - There are only two realistic candidates for a position, where the methods produce identical results anyway. - Your constitution or bylaws already specify plurality and changing it would require a formal amendment. - Speed and simplicity matter more than resolving a close, multi-candidate field precisely, like a quick departmental rep election.

Ranked-choice is worth the extra step when: - You regularly have three or more candidates for the same position (contested executive races, board seats). - Past elections have produced winners with a low share of the total vote, and it has caused disputes. - Your members care about the *legitimacy* of the outcome as much as the outcome itself. A students' union president or an association chair benefits from being able to say "a majority of members, not just a plurality, support this result."

The part that actually matters for administration

The honest reason most institutions stick with plurality isn't a considered preference. It's that counting ranked-choice ballots by hand across several elimination rounds is slow and error-prone, and explaining the elimination process to members who are watching the count is its own challenge. That operational cost disappears once the counting itself is automated: a ballot platform can run every elimination round instantly and produce the same transparent, round-by-round breakdown a paper count would, without anyone in the room needing to manually redistribute ballots under time pressure.
